Why Project X Designs vs. Big Coin Companies

Most challenge coin vendors require you to order 50–100 pieces minimum, wait 3–4 weeks, and accept enamel-fill color that chips and fades. Here’s what’s different when you order from a veteran-owned laser shop in Texas.

What Makes a Great Challenge Coin – And Why Most Vendors Get It Wrong

Challenge coins have a long tradition. What started as military unit identification tokens have expanded into law enforcement, fire departments, first responder teams, corporate recognition programs, motorcycle clubs, and personal collections. The coin you carry is a statement of belonging, of service, of achievement.

Which is why it matters how it’s made.

Most challenge coin vendors on the internet operate the same way: you upload an image, pick a size and finish from a dropdown, pay a deposit, and wait 3-4 weeks for a container ship from overseas to deliver your coins. The color you see in the proof is soft enamel paint pressed into recessed areas. It looks good when it’s new. After a few years of rattling around in a pocket or clipped to a keychain, it chips, fades, and loses detail.

At Project X Designs, we do it differently.

Full-Color MOPA Fiber Laser Engraving – What That Actually Means

Our fiber laser doesn’t apply color on top of metal, it changes the metal itself. Through a process called laser-induced oxidation, the laser modulates pulse duration and frequency to create permanent color markings at the surface of stainless steel and other metals. The color is in the material, not on it.

That means:

  • No chipping – there’s no coating to chip
  • No fading – the color doesn’t degrade with UV exposure the way paint does
  • No peeling – because there’s nothing to peel
  • Full photographic color detail – logos, portraits, gradients, and fine text all render cleanly

For challenge coins specifically, this means your unit crest, department badge, company logo, or custom design holds its detail for decades, not years.

No Minimum Order – Why That Matters More Than You Think

The standard minimum order at most challenge coin companies is 50-100 pieces. That works great if you’re ordering for an entire department or a large organization. It doesn’t work at all if you need:

  • A single commemorative coin for a retirement, promotion, or milestone
  • 10–25 coins for a small military unit, squad, or crew
  • A prototype before committing to a large run
  • A replacement for a lost or damaged coin

Project X Designs has no minimum order quantity. You can order one coin. The price-per-unit adjusts based on quantity. Ordering 100 costs less per coin than ordering 5, but there’s no floor that forces you to buy more than you need.

Who Orders Custom Challenge Coins

Military units and veterans – Unit coins, deployment commemoratives, rank promotion coins, retirement coins, and coins honoring fallen service members. As a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business, we understand the weight these coins carry.

Law enforcement and fire departments – Department coins, special assignment coins, retirement and service milestone coins. These are often small-batch orders where exactly where most vendors fail.

Corporate and business – Employee recognition, sales achievement, executive gifts, trade show giveaways, and brand awareness pieces. A well-made challenge coin is a desk piece that doesn’t get thrown away.

Motorcycle clubs and organizations – Club membership coins, event commemoratives, rally coins. These often need small runs with detailed custom artwork.

Individuals – Custom personal coins, family crests, hobby coins, and one-of-a-kind keepsakes. If you want a single coin made from a photo, a logo, or an original design. We can do it.

The Design Process – How It Works

1. Send us your idea. Fill out the quote form below with your design concept, quantity, size, and any reference artwork. You don’t need a finished design file — a sketch, a description, or a logo you already have works fine as a starting point.

2. We quote you within 24 hours. You’ll get a clear price based on your quantity and specs with no hidden fees, no overseas shipping surprises.

3. Design approval. We work with you on the artwork until it’s exactly right before anything goes into production. You see a digital proof first.

4. Production and ship. Once you approve the design, we produce your coins and ship them directly to you. Timeline varies by quantity and current queue. We’ll give you an honest estimate upfront.
